TRANSCRIPT - BRIEF EXCERPT [on groupthink]

6:45

RETIRED VET: [on not taking the vaxx] I was told I was selfish, and a threat to humanity.

MICHAEL GRAY GRIFFITH: What's your reply to the selfishness?

RETIRED VET: [sighs] It was really difficult because these are my friends on FaceBook, and I didn't want to be mean to them, but they were being really mean to me. But also I understand that they're being responsible members of the community, it's just that they're not being told the whole story, and there's a lot more to the story. And whilst they're being responsible members of the community, they're also missing out on the rest of the story, and the rest of the story is that everyone else is actually being shut out of the community, and treated really unfairly when we're the ones who actually should be listened to because we're the ones who are sharing the whole story and they're only getting part of it. So it was really sad because, anyway—

MICHAEL GRAY GRIFFITH: Further to that, there's, as we've been talking to more and more people, there seems to be an accepted belief amongst psychologists that in certain times people prefer a lie to the truth. And we're sort of seeing that here, that they don't seem to care they've only got a partial story, as long as they believe their masters, and then if you come out with the truth, they actually attack you. And this is actually throughout history, it's been documented. It's really peculiar.

RETIRED VET: Well yes, there's, I know all about this because while I've been out of work, so, I'll just— That's exactly right, though. It is a form of groupthink. And it is herding mentality. And it's like, a lot of people did get a nice sense of belonging when they were part of a community that is doing the right thing for everyone else. But at the same time people who seek the truth also could be part of this community too, and we could all be seeking the truth instead and also still getting that wonderful warm and fuzzy feel-good feeling that we're doing something right that's for the best, betterment of everybody, not just the people who want us to get vaccinated.

So yeah, it was a really confusing time. I had to look up a lot to find the actual reason was, and it comes down to naive thinking basically. It's fast thinking, it's shallow, superficial thinking where people have to make a decision on the spot. And it's like, the general consensus is this, I don't have time to go into these conspiracies, which is what they're called. Well they are! But they're facts not theories. And yeah, of course I understand that people have a job, they have a family,

and they just want to do the right thing. However, it got really scary.
