My mum was born in Broken Hill, many stories have been told of a once thriving dusty old place but it had been alive. I have lived in 3 different states in Aus and moved often for affordable rental and work. It's become impossible for many now. I should be retired by now, but work for rent so I have a decent roof over my head. I'm not that far from Broken Hill, 6 weeks in another town, and people are not friendly like when I was young. Forget welcome to country, there's no longer welcome to the neighbourhood, our town, people don't have time anymore or trust?

Funny how so many trusted the gov or science but closed the door on their own kind. Yes I believe Covid changed us all nowhere was untouched. My family will never be the same as I am sure is the way it is with most of us.

BTW Broken hill was one of the cheapest places to buy a run down old place but even that is out of reach now.

Lucky country? No we were lied to.

Yes that's what I don't get - my own niece and nephews don't speak to me - the attitude was they were old enough to decide for themselves and how dare I keep sending them information - they called me and their mother tin foil hatters - and still there is this divide to this day - the angst from those who felt the government was telling them the truth, and their own family was hurting them is still baffling...

Great post Michael , you take me right into the place , I’d love to check it out one day , so many backwaters built on old fashioned guts are forgotten both in your country and over here in NZ , the simple ways of life is a distant memory, where there was true community spirit and a moral fortitude they bound us all together in a loose unspoken understanding and respect for each other , where we could leave our homes with the key under the front doormat or even unlocked , my parents generation, anyway love your work , all the best for the Year ahead , may you continue to inspire and spread hope in a world that can at times feel dark , God bless brother

My grandfather and great grandfather worked at the Broken Hill mines, way back in the early days, they were Cornish miners. I have family buried there and visited the town a couple of years ago on a family history trip. Some moved on or stayed in Victoria, or back to SA where they originally migrated to My great Uncle has a monument to him at Lake Linlithgow for saving the trees and planting more around the Lake, they were from Germany.
